Discover the history of the Gargano's trabucchi, from Vieste to Peschici

The trabucchi of the Gargano outline a unique and wild landscape, offering unforgettable views. Originating as ancient fishing mechanisms, the trabucchi characterize the Gargano coast between Vieste and Peschici, extending up to the Abruzzo coast.

Their architecture holds all the ingenuity of ancient and fascinating peoples: the most accredited historical theory suggests that centuries ago, the Phoenicians or Greeks built these majestic architectural structures to facilitate fishing.

What are the trabucchi on the Gargano?

Declared historical monuments, the trabucchi in Apulia on the coast between Vieste and Peschici are ancient wooden fishing machines, built on stilt houses overlooking the sea, which extend towards the water via long arms, the so-called "antennae", to which large, tight-mesh nets, called trabocchetti, are attached. Using a system of winches and counterweights, they allow the nets to be lowered into the sea without having to go out in a boat, and then raised to collect the fish once the shoals have been sighted.

Where are the trabucchi located in Apulia and how many are there?

The trabucchi are located mainly along the coast of the Gargano promontory, particularly between the towns of Peschici and Vieste. It is not possible to give an exact number, but it is estimated that about 20 remain in the area, although many more were counted in the past. Many of these have been restored and converted into restaurants where you can enjoy truly unique gastronomic experiences.
